The Great Health Food Con
After a good workout at the gym, I end up with a huge hunger. I usually crave something to eat and it is not surprising that that I find it impossible to walk pass the grocery store on the way home. Rather than walk in with a blank mind and end up buying a load of rubbish, I try to plan out a healthy meal as I walk down the street. So when I get in the shop I am really focussed on the preparation of health foods for my evening meal.
Like most evenings I was chatting to the store owner about life and the universe and I told her about what I was going to make with the bag of brown rice that I was purchasing. I explained that as a sports coach I had to be very careful about what I eat and why I am keen on health foods.
By coincidence, the store had just taken on a new range of ready prepared boxed meals and the owner asked me what I thought of them. Well, I looked at the list of ingredients and told her that were fairly typical of most frozen meals, full of highly processed rubbish and loaded with sodium and other chemicals such as preservatives.
I tried to be diplomatic as I told her that it was food like this that was contributing to the nation’s overweight problem. The store owner was a BIG woman and very over weight and I thought that she might be offended, but it was quite the opposite. She told me that she had tried everything to lose weight but nothing had worked. I smiled inside as I thought that nothing could be the one thing that might work! But I kept quiet and carried on listening. She had tried many of the health foods in the shop.
I hear people all the time telling me that they have tried to lose weight. It seems to be some sort of defence mechanism that they adopt when they see that I have a fit and lean body and compare it to their own. Inevitably they all tell me about the latest weight loss fad or health food product that they have faithfully followed but which didn’t work. But the problem is that they are all trying the wrong things. Like the store keeper, losing weight was something that they did or tried.
I explained to the store keeper that losing weight and getting fit is a complete lifestyle. It is the way that you live and not something that you do or try. A TRUE healthy active lifestyle is one that will make you lean and healthy for life.
I asked the store keeper to name three products that she thought were good health foods in the store. The health food products that she chose were:
- Slimming shakes. These are loaded with high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, bad artificial sweetners and a load of other chemicals.
- Rice Cakes, sold as fat free. These are pure refined starch with absolutely no fibre content. The starch immediately breaks down in your body to form sugar which then promotes the storage of fat.
- Protein Bars containing hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, and enough sugar alcohols to upset your stomach for several day
I explained to her the error of her ways and explained what good health foods were all about. It wasn’t the store keepers fault; most people make the same mistakes. People read the names on the box and don’t read the list of ingredients. Not surprisingly, that is precisely what the manufacturers want to happen. They are hardly going to highlight the bad items to be found in the fhealth foods, or you wouldn’t buy it!
On the FRONT of all of the packages that the store keeper named were great sounding things like "fat free", "reduced sugar", "high protein", "low cholesterol", "low carb", etc. But it was on the back of the box that the truth could be found.
In reality, we are all being misled and conned by the confusing marketing and labelling and the conflicting nutritional information in the mass media. Truth comes a poor second to profit.
If you want to discover the TRUTH about what it really takes to eat a truly healthy diet that maximizes your metabolism, brings your hormonal balance back to normal, reduces cravings, and strips off body fat faster than you'd believe is possible...
